2016 Petite Sirah

2016 Petite Sirah
2016 Petite Sirah
Tasting notes

This striking, violent violet colored, wine opens with aromas of raspberry jam, fresh strawberries, black peppercorn, graham cracker, sage, and a hint of bacon fat. The palate begins with a fruity attack of blackberry, raspberry, Bing cherry, and pomegranate, before finishing with savory flavors of tobacco leaf, sunflower seed, and dry, brawny tannins. Enjoyable now in its exuberant youth or after a few years maturing in your cellar.

Production notes

All Watermill wines are hand picked late in seasons for maximum ripeness. They are then gently pressed in small volumes and undergo inoculated fermentation in 1 to 1.5 ton small lot fermenters. The wine sits on the skins for more than two weeks where it undergoes additional maceration through punch downs and pump overs for color and tannin integration before being transferred to barrel. All reds age for between 12 and 16 months in a combination of new and neutral medium toast French and American oak before bottling.

Other notes

Petite Sirah is a new variety for Watermill. With the acquisition of Windy Point Vineyard in the Rattlesnake Hills in 2016, Watermill is now able to introduce our audience to a wider range of varieties and appellations within the Pacific Northwest, including this Petite Sirah from Windy Point. Petite Sirah is a distinct and heady addition to the Watermill lineup.
