2014 Late Harvest Gewürztraminer

2014 Late Harvest Gewürztraminer
2014 Late Harvest Gewürztraminer
Tasting notes

Honey, caramel, brown sugar and a bit of paper pulp waft over the palate and compliment a mouth feel that is closer to syrup then it is water. Finishes with just enough fruit tartness to balances our the luscious mouthfeel.

Production notes

All Watermill wines are hand picked late in seasons for maximum ripeness. They are then gently pressed in small volumes and undergo inoculated fermentation in 1 to 1.5 ton small lot fermenters. The wine sits on the skins for more than two weeks where it undergoes additional maceration through punch downs and pump overs for color and tannin integration before being transferred to barrel.

Other notes

An experiment in the art of the noble rot, late harvest wines are a showcase of the amazing chemistry that can happen when grapes are left to their own devices. Gewürztraminer is an interesting berry with a strong pinkish hue that sits midway between red and white. Done in the traditional Alsace style, Watermill's Gewürztraminer comes from a high altitude vineyard in the extreme northwest of the Walla Walla Valley. Allowed to hang on the vine well past the point where all other dry wines have been picked, the additional hangtime and cooling temperatures concentrate sugars in each berry making for sweeter style wine with infinite aging potential.
