2017 Ku'ueli Vineyard Carménère

A new varietal for Watermill, the Carménère is a trial exercise in what is varietally possible within the Walla Walla Valley. Carménère is often referred to as South American Merlot, and Watermill makes Carménère in the ancient Bordeaux style that highlights the playful nature of the varietal and provides for a distinct flavor profile that is unique in the Watermill lineup.

Tasting notes

A masterclass in the combination of traditional flavors and Walla Walla’s unique terroir. This wine is instantly recognizable as Carménère and holds onto the spicy finish that has captivated drinkers of Chilean Carménère for more than 150 years, this is combined with Walla Walla’s classic notes of blue fruit for a wine with medium aging potential and good young body.

Production notes

All Watermill wines are hand picked late in seasons for maximum ripeness. They are then gently pressed in small volumes and undergo inoculated fermentation in 1 to 1.5 ton small lot fermenters. The wine sits on the skins for more than two weeks where it undergoes additional maceration through punch downs and pump overs for color and tannin integration before being transferred to barrel. All reds age for between 12 and 16 months in a combination of new and neutral medium toast French and American oak before bottling.

"2017 Watermill Carmenère, Walla Walla Valley, Ku’ueli Vineyard ($30)
This a fine rendition of the “lost grape” of Bordeaux. Deep ruby-crimson colored, it emits aromas of raspberry, cherry, plum, red roses, lilac and incense. The flavors are medium bodied but vigorous, with bright red fruits that are imbued with red licorice, cocoa, black tea and earth. The back picks up pressed berried, roasted nuts, toffee and charcoal, followed by a ripe moderate tannin finish. 18.5/20 points."
-Rand Sealey, Review of Washington Wines (August 2019)
