Vineyard and Terroir Notes

The 2020 Estate Merlot is sourced from Anna Marie Vineyard, Watermill’s premier Bordeaux-producing site, nestled high in the foothills of the Blue Mountains at the southern end of the Walla Walla Valley. Spanning 87 acres, the vineyard thrives on sandy loam soils, ideal for red varietals. The unique terroir benefits from hot days and cool fall nights, fostering optimal ripening and balance in the fruit.

Production Notes

This wine is composed of 99% Merlot and 1% Malbec. The grapes were meticulously harvested and fermented to preserve their rich flavors. The wine was aged for 20 months in 33% new French oak from premium coopers, imparting structure, depth, and subtle complexity to the finished product. With only 175 cases produced, this is a limited release.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Estate Merlot opens with generous aromas of ripe blueberry, tea leaf, and savory tobacco, with hints of herbs and exotic cardamom adding intrigue. The palate showcases plums and black currants interwoven with a touch of vanilla, creating a smooth and approachable profile. Soft, balanced tannins lead to a refined finish, making this wine an excellent choice for both standalone enjoyment or pairing with a variety of dishes. Elegant and versatile, this Merlot is a testament to the exceptional terroir of the Walla Walla Valley.
