2023 Viognier "The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater"
Vineyard and Terroir Notes
The Viognier grapes are sourced exclusively from Waterstone Vineyard, located in the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater AVA. This vineyard sits at the heart of the AVA, celebrated for its distinctive Freewater Cobble terroir. Here, alluvial stones create well-drained soils that retain warmth during the day and experience cooling effects at night. The unique combination of soil and climate enhances the vibrancy and depth of flavor in the grapes.
Harvest and Production
Harvested from a small 5.4-acre plot, this Viognier underwent meticulous production techniques to highlight the vineyard’s characteristics. A blend of fermentation methods was used to achieve a balanced profile: 25% was fermented in neutral French oak barrels, undergoing full malolactic fermentation for richness, while the remaining 75% was fermented in stainless steel to preserve fresh fruit notes. The wine aged for 10 months, resulting in a complex, layered expression. Bottled on August 7, 2024.
Tasting Notes
Pale straw in color, this Viognier presents enticing aromas of ripe peach, apricot, and honeysuckle, complemented by a bright hint of lemon zest. On the palate, it is lush and silky, displaying a refreshing vibrancy that harmonizes with subtle floral undertones. The finish is fresh and lively, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and balance.
