2022 Estate Carménère
Vineyard and Terroir
The 2022 Estate Carménère is sourced from the Ku‘ulei block in Watermill’s estate vineyards in the Walla Walla Valley. With its well-drained soils and balanced sun exposure, this site produces grapes with exceptional color, spice, and aromatic intensity. Low yields—averaging 4 tons per acre—ensure concentrated fruit. The region’s warm days and cool nights contribute to the wine’s vibrant character and balanced acidity, while the vineyard’s terroir enhances Carménère’s signature herbaceous and peppery notes.
Production
Crafted from 95% Carménère and 5% Malbec, this wine was fermented in stainless steel open-top tanks with 18 days of skin contact to extract color, tannin, and aromatics. After pressing, the wine was aged 24 months in oak barrels, including 20% new French oak. This aging regime adds structure and depth while softening the wine’s natural spice. The small addition of Malbec enhances the wine’s mouthfeel and amplifies its dark fruit character.
Tasting
This Estate Carménère opens with bold aromas of black cherry, roasted red pepper, and hints of smoked paprika. On the palate, layers of plum, dark raspberry, and baking spice unfold, backed by subtle notes of graphite, tobacco leaf, and a touch of cocoa. The tannins are polished yet present, offering structure without overpowering the wine’s vibrant fruit and savory edge. A whisper of Malbec adds richness to the mid-palate, and the finish is long and expressive with gentle notes of oak and spice. This is a beautifully balanced Carménère with elegance and character—ideal for pairing with grilled meats, roasted vegetables, or hearty stews.
